  • The Farley Report from Phoenix #164: 10-16-12

    Howdy, Friends O'Farley…

    18 years ago today, my daughter Amelia came into my life and changed everything.

    Before her arrival I had no idea how powerful love could be. When her sister GiGi arrived a few years later on a crisp February morning, that love was multiplied many times over.

    As Amelia and GiGi both grow up into beautiful, smart, inquisitive, passionate, and dedicated young women, I am all the more committed to doing everything I can to make their lives even better than ours. That means supporting our schools, strengthening our economy, and keeping our democracy vital in the face of the onslaught of corporate money and divisive rhetoric.

    I have often told my girls that they are the reason I am committed to public service. I want them, and their generation, to inherit a world of hope, love, and promise. I don't want them to have to clean up our messes.

    Howdy, Friends O'Farley…

    There are only 49 days left to the election -- 7 weeks until we are able to move Arizona forward at long last.

    So this Farley Report will be lighter than normal on policy discussion. We can talk about the big policy changes that will come after the election, but first we have to get elected. That's why this Report is an invitation.

    This is the year we have been waiting for -- we can end extremism in the Legislature, but we all need to work together in whatever way we can. Legislative District 9 is one of the most competitive districts in the state, and your help can make the difference.

    You are invited to create change in these ways:

    Howdy, Friends O'Farley…

    Before we get into the policy news, I want to thank you all for a totally humbling show of support to our campaign last week. In less than 18 hours after I sent out the email, 78 of you contributed more than $5,000 to help us in our efforts to end extremism in the Arizona Legislature.

    Let's keep that positive momentum going: Please contribute, $25, $50, or even $200 to our campaign TODAY, and sign up as a volunteer to join me as I walk door to door or phone voters -- my campaign manager Alma always has great treats for Farley volunteers!

    I am walking every afternoon and Saturday mornings, and the weather has actually been pretty good lately. Email Alma for details on where you can meet us for walking, and if you want to make phone calls to your neighbors, just drop by the Ron Barber HQ at 3400 E. Speedway behind Ike's Coffee. You can phone on behalf of Ron, Rich Carmona, and me at the same time.

    Howdy, Friends O'Farley…

    It's been a month since the last Farley Report, and Arizonans have been blessed with very little action from the current supermajority at the Legislature, despite some empty threats to once again undercut voters' wishes. So this report will be brief and to the point.

    Candidates all over the state have instead been out in our new districts calling and knocking on doors, raising money, filling out questionnaires, and gaining endorsements. Speaking of the latter, I am humbled to have received the support of many terrific organizations in the last month, including:

    --> Arizona Education Association

    --> Professional Fire Fighters of Arizona

    --> Arizona Fraternal Order of Police

    --> Arizona Association of Realtors

    --> Associated General Contractors of Arizona

    --> Arizona AFL-CIO

    --> Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association

    --> Planned Parenthood of Arizona

    --> Arizona Medical Association

    All these groups agree that it's time for a changed Legislature in Phoenix. It's time to stop wasting our time and energy on partisan grandstanding, and get to work creating jobs and improving our schools so our kids can compete in the world economy. This is the year to do it, and we can if we all work together.

    Howdy, Friends O'Farley…

    Welcome to the first off-session monthly Farley Report of 2012. Since not much is happening policy-wise at the Capitol, this issue will be focusing on politics.

    I want to offer huge congratulations to Ron Barber and all the volunteers and contributors who helped him win last Tuesday to carry on Gabby's legacy of service to Southern Arizona. Because of our hard work, we have elected a man of integrity, intelligence, empathy, and experience to the U.S. Congress, a body that sorely needs more people like him.

    Now we need to focus on elections in the Fall, to keep Ron in office, elect Richard Carmona to the U.S. Senate, and change the majority in the Arizona Legislature.

    In any other year, the latter goal might seem far-fetched. But this year we are seeing a perfect confluence of newly competitive districts, great candidates with great resources, and an electorate energized for real change.

    Howdy, Friends O'Farley…

    First a brief word from the campaign:

    Thanks to your support and work, the Farley for State Senate Campaign filed the maximum number of signatures with the Secretary of State's office yesterday -- 1,220! We are now officially on the ballot in the new District 9.

    I am so grateful to all our volunteers for your help so far. We still have a long ways to go in order to win in November, and I will continue to need your help to persuade voters by phone and door-to-door, and I will need your financial contributions to get the word out to all the voters in the new district.

    Furthermore, your support will help me work for other Democratic legislative candidates throughout Arizona -- we have a great chance of taking an outright majority in the Senate for the first time in decades if we all work together.

    Here's how you can help:

    1--> Come to our joint walks with Ron Barber at NEW TIMES: 9am and 4pm on Saturdays, and 4pm on Sundays and Wednesdays. Volunteers will be gathering nominating signatures for Barber for CD2, Carmona for U.S. Senate, and passing out literature for Farley for LD9. Please join us! If you can come, call or email my campaign manager Alma Hernandez, 520-302-0623 or Alma@FriendsOFarley.com.

    2--> Please CONTRIBUTE $25, $50 or even $100 and VOLUNTEER on our website TODAY, and share our website with your friends & colleagues. Every dollar counts in our newly competitive district!

    3--> Host a house party, if you live in the new District 9, so I can meet your neighbors in person. See if you are in LD9 by checking out the Google Map here.   Email Alma if you want to sign up: 520-302-0623 or Alma@FriendsOFarley.com.

    And now, some really big news…

    And now, as promised, the news…

    Now for the news…

    --> Budget: Negotiations are not going well between the Governor and majority legislative leadership. In fact, yesterday she issued an ultimatum that she would veto all bills that come to her desk before she gets a budget she likes, something that has not gone over terribly well with her fellow Republicans. I also will have to tread carefully with my long-term care bill 2713 to avoid it becoming collateral damage in this GOP internecine conflict.

    Howdy, Friends O'Farley…

    Before we get to the legislative scoop, here's what YOU can do to help us bring common sense back to the Arizona Legislature this November:

    --> You can help give Southern Arizona a strong voice in both Phoenix and Washington at the same time! Ron Barber and I will be holding joint walks starting this weekend out of the Barber headquarters, 3400 E. Speedway, Suite 114 (the same space that Jonathan Rothschild used last year for his campaign).

    We will be walking at 10am and 1pm on Saturdays and 1pm on Sundays. Volunteers will be gathering nominating signatures for Barber for CD2 and Farley for LD9. Please join us! If you can come, call or email my campaign manager Daniel Hernandez, 520-248-7432 or daniel@FriendsOFarley.com.

    Howdy, Friends O'Farley…

    As you've undoubtedly heard by now, my good friend Ron Barber has announced that he'll be a candidate for Congress in the fall regular election.  I couldn't be more thrilled.

    I had already announced my support for Ron's candidacy in this summer's special election, and with his announcement that he'll run in the fall, I immediately suspended my own campaign for Congress and threw my full support behind his campaign.  Ron is a dedicated public servant who will be a powerful voice in Washington.

    With the suspension of my Congressional campaign, I also announced my candidacy for the State Senate in the new Legislative District 9.  The people of Southern Arizona need a strong advocate at the state capitol who will stand up for them every day.

    Howdy, Friends O'Farley…

    To start off tonight I want to let you know that next Wednesday, February 29, I will be making a pretty exciting announcement about my political future. I would love to have you there with me to share that moment.

    The first stop on the announcement tour will be at the Tucson Botanical Gardens at 10:30am -- on Alvernon just south of Grant. Next I will appear on the Bill Buckmaster Show at noon on KVOI 1030-AM, then early afternoon in Green Valley (I'll let you know when and where next week), on the John C. Scott Show at the 4:00 hour, and in Sierra Vista at former Representative Pat Fleming's home, 3321 E. Ojibwa Street, at 5pm. Hope to see you at one of these stops!

    You will remember that my bipartisan Senior Caucus bill to make long-term care more affordable for middle-class seniors and the families that love them (HB2713) was scheduled for a hearing in the House Health Committee last Wednesday morning.

    Howdy, Friends O'Farley…

    Happy Valentine's Day and Happy Centennial, Arizona! Let's celebrate by dedicating ourselves to work for candidates all over this state who can lead us forward into the next century and bring back that Arizona greatness we all deserve.

    One thing we can do to reclaim our greatness is to avert the next century's crises before they happen. Tomorrow in the Health committee, Chairman Cecil Ash (R-Mesa) will hear my first Senior Caucus bill to help avert one of those crises.

    As the prime sponsor, I obtained three Republican co-sponsors to HB2713, which establishes the Arizona Long-Term Care Trust. This program allows taxpayers to set aside funds from their paycheck into a savings account that can accrue tax-free interest and be withdrawn for long-term care expenses when needed.

    Howdy, Friends O'Farley…

    Yesterday, students from UofA, ASU, and NAU spent the day at the Capitol talking with legislators. Unfortunately -- for the third consecutive year -- they are on the defense, with a full court press against legislative attacks on the university system.

    As I told the students in my speech kicking off their day, we have a lot of work to do. Senator Ron Gould (R-Lake Havasu City) wants to allow guns on campus (SB1474) in order to make students safer, and Rep. John Kavanagh (R-Fountain Hills) wants to make students in poverty pay $2000 more per year in order to make them richer. The governor's budget goes after UofA in particular as she sets each university against the other fighting over the few remaining pieces of a shrinking revenue pie.

    Howdy, Friends O'Farley…

    There are many caucuses in the Arizona Legislature besides the Republican and Democratic caucuses, including the Children's Caucus, Native American Caucus, Tourism Caucus, Animal Caucus, and others organized around important issues.

    There is one glaring omission, especially for a state with as many older citizens as Arizona -- a Senior Caucus. So I set out to create one and find members of both parties to help.

    Living with my mother's four-year struggle with dementia (which ended in her death last April) made very clear to me that we need to work together in a bipartisan way to educate ourselves and develop policies that confront the very real issues associated with aging.
